Maybe he was never a good manager
Amorim has been a shadow of himself since he left Sporting for Manchester United. He lost 23 games in 63 matches and had one of the worst records in Manchester United’s history. His sacking was inevitable as he left key players out of the squad and justified to us that these players weren’t good enough.
One example is Kobe Mainoo; Amorim told fans that Mainoo had to compete with Bruno and he could not play in the system. He made fans believe that Mainoo was not good enough and had talks with the board that he wanted him sold or to go on loan.
This was a lie because Michael Carrick took over and Mainoo was a starter for every game. Mainoo was the best player since January for Manchester United. Amorim sent Rashford to Barcelona and told fans that Rashford didn’t work hard enough.
Amorim told lies upon lies, and his sacking led to Man Utd revitalising their squad and moving to a formation that suits the playing style of the players that he bought for the club.
Amorim collected a £12 million exit fee, and now the karma has returned to bite him as he is having the outcome in Milan. Milan is a club in transition at the moment, and appointing Amorim might not be a good idea. He has not won a game in preseason, and his bad record continues.
His stubbornness in not changing his tactics is one of the things that a lot of fans don’t like about Amorim.
He is eager to implement the 3-5-2 formation, a formation which suits certain players, and the manager will need the right players to play this style. Also, this formation leaves gaps, which makes it hard to cover the ground and put more pressure on the central defensive midfielder, especially if the player is not mobile; the player will be exposed as a weak link in the system.
The trajectory for Amorim is not going well, and he might be the first manager in Europe to get the sack in the first month on the job. Maybe we are starting to see that Amorim is not a good coach, and maybe he had good players in Sporting to play this style, or now other managers have adapted to this system and know how to neutralise it. Either way, Amorim will lose his job if this continues.
