African football needs uplifting
After a long men’s FIFA World Cup in North America, a lot of football fans are getting sick of international matches, and they want to get to watching club football.
CAF hosting a tournament during a World Cup season is bizarre because they know that no one was going to watch the women’s African Cup of Nations. A lot of people didn’t even know that the tournament was being held, and football fans don’t even know where they can stream it.
CAF has not prioritised this tournament, as they have put a tournament on which doesn’t have the same impact as the men’s AFCON tournament. Even then, the AFCON still lacks promotion, as the matches are difficult to stream.
CAF has not done any deals with global broadcasters to broadcast the games, and this is poor from an organisation that is meant to restore African football and enhance the women’s game to reach the same standards as UEFA.
The WAFCON doesn’t get even half the recognition and revenue that the UEFA Women’s Championship does. UEFA puts a lot more resources into the women’s game, and they have enhanced their resources to improve game broadcasting.
Women’s football in Africa produces good talent and better abilities compared to their European counterparts, but the lack of grassroots football for females is very evident due to the lack of resources from CAF.
The women’s game needs to be promoted to retain the essence of modern football for females in Africa. African women deserve to play the game to the highest level, and CAF needs to do more to show this by broadcasting the games on global television networks, and not just on YouTube.
