Gemini is becoming the consumers’ choice

Google Gemini is leading the way with consumer AI

OpenAI and Anthropic are competing to become the leading consumer AI platform, with ChatGPT and Claude driving users to switch preferences based on model performance. Claude’s reported valuation of over £800 billion raises questions about the credibility of such figures, while OpenAI’s competition with Grok and Elon Musk has created additional strategic challenges.

Organisation-focused AI platforms are often overlooked by consumers who do not use them regularly. Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini are frequently described as “transformative AI platforms” because they build on technologies such as Bing and Google Search to deliver more capable and intelligent results.

However, Microsoft’s integration of Copilot across its ecosystem remains incomplete. For example, it has not yet been seamlessly incorporated into applications such as Word and Excel for tasks including grammar, spelling, and AI-use checks in academic work.

Despite its development, Copilot still lags behind some competitors in usability. It generally works best with a Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 subscription; without one, the experience can feel clunky and less effective than competing services available on free plans. As a result, Copilot is most valuable for organisations already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem and may offer limited workflow improvements for individual users.

Google Gemini appears well positioned to dominate the market, largely because many of the applications it integrates with are free. Alphabet has successfully positioned Gemini to enhance productivity for both individuals and organisations. Users can access many of its features without subscription fees, unlike several competing platforms.

Gemini’s integration into Google Workspace applications such as Docs and Slides streamlines tasks and improves productivity, while Google’s extensive infrastructure enables deployment across its entire software ecosystem. Combined with Google Search, Gemini often delivers highly effective results that can rival or surpass those of ChatGPT and Claude, while Copilot can sometimes produce less reliable responses.
