How Gen Z Is Reviving Cinema Culture

Streaming is becoming boring

Back in the day, around a decade ago, many millennials abandoned cinemas and turned to streaming content, whether through legal or illegal platforms. For many people, going to the cinema became a thing of the past. While some still enjoyed the big-screen experience, others believed it was overrated and questioned whether it was worth spending so much money on tickets, expensive popcorn, and cinemas that often felt outdated and uncomfortable.

Many millennials passed this mentality on to their Gen Z children, reinforcing the idea that cinema was no longer the preferred way to watch films.

At the same time, streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video acquired studios and began producing their own films and television series, further fuelling doubts about the future of cinemas. These streaming giants created a culture in which staying at home to watch your favourite films and TV series became the norm. Many millennial parents embraced this shift because cinema ticket prices had risen significantly, making regular trips to the cinema increasingly expensive.

Gen Z has often been described as the generation driving digital transformation, and many predicted that it would either save or further damage cinema culture. However, over the past three years, this trend appears to have shifted in a positive direction. Going to the cinema has become fashionable again among many young people. Staying at home is no longer seen as the only appealing option, and going to the cinema to experience the big screen has become a popular social activity with friends.

Cinema operators have also responded by modernising their venues, introducing more comfortable seating, improved facilities, and a better overall customer experience. As a result, more members of Gen Z are returning to cinemas, not only to watch films but also to share their experiences on social media. For many young people, a trip to the cinema has become more than just watching a film; it has become part of a social and lifestyle experience.
