115 charges incoming
In the final week of the Premier League season, rumours emerged that Pep Guardiola would depart Manchester City Football Club. This was unexpected as the club was set to play its most significant game of the season against Bournemouth FC. Before the match, Guardiola did not address the rumours in the press conference, which suggested they were false.
This situation created the impression that Arsenal was poised to secure the Premier League title, which they did. In the final two games, Guardiola’s performance appeared to wane, despite having signed a two-year contract last season. It would have been prudent for Guardiola to address the fans at the final home game after winning the Premier League for a record time for a foreign manager.
This season, most fans recognised that Manchester City was undergoing a transitional period as key players such as Kevin de Bruyne and Kyle Walker departed to pursue new opportunities. Pundits and supporters anticipated that City would challenge for the league title and have successful cup runs, which they achieved. They won the League Cup and FA Cup, which were considered significant domestic successes.
However, the Champions League proved an insurmountable challenge for a team in transition. Manchester City has not been at its best this season despite attempting to compete with Arsenal. The underlying issue is that Manchester City has built a team over the past decade that has breached numerous Financial Fair Play rules. The substantial 115 charges against the club may be the reason Guardiola has not departed.
Following his signing of a new two-year contract last season, Pep Guardiola was widely expected to remain at the club for a significant period to rebuild a competitive team. However, his team has struggled this season, and Guardiola is aware of the potential consequences for his reputation.
If the club is found guilty of these charges, its reputation would be tarnished, as it was a part of the era when these offences were committed. Guardiola is aware that the club will face charges and that helping a team to return to its former glory is a challenging task. He has never been adept at rebuilding teams as he has consistently prioritised acquiring high-profile players. If the club is relegated, Guardiola would not want to be present to witness that outcome.
