The remake was not needed
Scary Movie was tipped to be one of the biggest comedy films of the year, but it is evident from watching the film that it did not live up to the hype that previous entries in the franchise enjoyed.
The dark humour feels very forced, as though the filmmakers are trying too hard to appeal to a younger audience. In doing so, however, they risk alienating the generation that grew up with the franchise. The film feels poor overall, with very little plot and no real sense of direction.
One joke follows another, but many of them seem to have no significance or connection to the story. I cannot provide many examples because I quickly lost interest and eventually fell asleep.
As for the acting, Shawn Wayans’ performance was mediocre, while Marlon Wayans was disappointing and underwhelming. At one point, they introduced Joan Wick, a spoof of John Wick, who seemed to appear out of nowhere.
The character felt far too over-the-top and reminded me of the parody style used in Don’t Be a Menace. The characterisation didn’t land, the timing of the punchlines felt off, and the writing felt weak.
Overall, the story lacked direction, the jokes felt over the top, corny, and often ineffective, and the performances didn’t elevate the material. Perhaps this style of comedy is not for me, but I gave it a chance. If you are considering watching it, make sure you have a free ticket or can see it at a discounted price. In my opinion, it is not worth paying full price for and ultimately feels like a waste of time.
