GTA 6 will be delayed again

Another pushback is coming with a 2027 release date

Take-Two has been playing mind games with consumers for a long time, effectively misleading the public about the release of GTA 6. GTA VI has been in development for over a decade, yet the game has not even produced a beta version since its public announcement three years ago. It is a genuine concern that a game costing between $1 billion and $1.5 billion has not yet had a trial run, an extended trailer, or even a gameplay reveal to demonstrate how its mechanics will work. According to sources, workers at Rockstar Games are unhappy with the development process, and senior executives reportedly feel the game’s mechanics are too similar to those of its predecessor.

In recent weeks, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive reported that the game will face no further delays and will work seamlessly on next-gen consoles. However, this does not seem to be the whole story. The new CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma, reportedly dislikes the new microtransaction systems coming with GTA 6; she has been trying to scale back microtransaction mechanisms on Xbox, whilst also reducing the price of Xbox Live and removing the Copilot AI from the console.

Sony is in a similar camp, raising concerns about the transition to next-gen consoles and the inflated prices for consumers. This echoes what Rockstar Games did when they released GTA 5 on the PlayStation 3 console in 2013, only to release the game again on newer consoles later on. Sony wants to avoid a repeat of that commotion to protect consumer satisfaction.

Alongside these reports from console manufacturers, Rockstar has internal issues to contend with. Working conditions in their Indian and US offices are looking unpromising, and investors are worried about breaking even to secure a return on their investment.

Strictly speaking, GTA 6 shouldn’t need heavy marketing; the GTA brand is comparable to Apple’s iPhone, as soon as Apple announces a new model, pre-orders surge by 120%. However, this might not happen for GTA 6, which could struggle to meet customer expectations, especially during the first few weeks of release.

Rockstar will need to ensure there are no glitches and that the gameplay does not lag; otherwise, they will face massive public backlash and potentially even lawsuits.

There are numerous signs that GTA 6 will be delayed again. The first is the poor working environment, characterised by heavy overtime and night shifts lasting until 3am across various offices. Secondly, the summer marketing campaigns for GTA 6 seem delayed; a game of this magnitude should have a massive promotional push, though major outlets like TechRadar and IGN have already covered it heavily. Thirdly, there is the delay in pre-orders. Pre-orders were originally expected in May 2026, but the new date has reportedly been moved to October, just a month before the initially projected release.
